A practical DTF printing cost calculator
Use this DTF printing cost calculator to turn sheet or roll dimensions, film/media cost, uniform-grid artwork packing or a manual used rectangle, ink/powder on printed area, labor and waste into an itemised job cost and a margin-based quote. Defaults are labelled demo assumptions so you can replace them with your shop rates. The tool does not claim universal ink usage, market prices, or globally optimal packing.
Pair it with the free gang sheet builder when you need freeform artwork packing, or return to the halftone generator for screen-ready dot patterns before you print.
How to estimate DTF printing cost
- 1. Enter media and film/media cost. Choose inches or centimetres, then sheet or roll dimensions and the substrate cost you actually pay. That rate is the only film/media charge.
- 2. Set artwork or a used rectangle. Art mode packs a uniform grid (both orientations) from art size, transfer count and spacing. Manual mode enters one printed rectangle that must fit the media by dimensions.
- 3. Add ink, powder, labor and margin. Adjust demo ink/powder rates (printed artwork area only), waste, labor minutes and desired margin. Optional tax is listed separately from the ex-tax quote.
Worked example (demo rates)
Starting demo: a 22 × 24 in sheet at $18.00 film/media each, 6 transfers of 10 × 12 in with 0.25 in spacing (uniform grid: 2 per sheet → 3 sheets), printed artwork area 6×10×12 in² for ink/powder, 8% waste, 15 min setup plus 2 min per transfer at $45.00/hr, and a 35% desired margin of price.
- Uniform grid capacity 2/sheet → 3 sheet(s); printed area ≈ 720.00 in².
- Total cost ≈ $97.24 · per transfer ≈ $16.21.
- Suggested quote (ex-tax) ≈ $149.60 · gross profit ≈ $52.36 (35.00% margin).
- Formula: quote = total cost ÷ (1 − margin/100). Tax, when set, is shown separately. Film/media is not double-counted.
DTF printing cost calculator FAQ
What does this DTF printing cost calculator include?
It itemises film/media substrate (sheet or roll charged once), ink and adhesive powder on printed artwork area, setup and run labor, waste percent, transfer quantity, a suggested quote from desired margin, and optional tax shown separately.
Is margin the same as markup?
No. This tool uses margin: profit divided by selling price. Quote = total cost ÷ (1 − margin%). Markup would be profit divided by cost and is not used here.
Are the ink and powder rates accurate for every shop?
No. Default consumable rates are editable demo assumptions with an implied coverage model. Ink coverage and powder use vary by printer, design coverage and process — replace them with your measured costs.
How does art size × count decide sheets?
Art mode uses a simple uniform rectangular grid and tries both 90° orientations. Capacity = floor((W+gap)/(w+gap)) × floor((H+gap)/(h+gap)) with spacing between items. That is not a globally optimal mixed packer. Manual mode is one used rectangle that must fit by dimensions. For freeform packing, use the gang sheet builder.
Is film charged twice?
No. Film/media is the sheet or roll material rate only. There is no separate film-per-area line. Ink and powder still use printed artwork area (count × width × height), not blank spacing.
Are my inputs uploaded?
No. The calculator runs in your browser. There is no account and no upload endpoint for these cost fields.
